Enphase Energy arrives at its October 26 earnings report with short interest at a fresh high, a Morgan Stanley target cut landing on the day of this note, and the stock down 12% over the past month to $32.03.
Short positioning has intensified since the previous note published on October 7. Short interest has climbed to 20.8% of the free float, up from 18.5% a week ago, a 14% rise over the past seven days and now up 41% over the past month. That is a meaningful acceleration. The ORTEX short score has edged higher to 65.5, its highest reading of the past two weeks. Yet the borrow market remains loose rather than stressed. Availability has actually expanded to 405%, from 296% last week, meaning there are now four shares available to lend for every one already borrowed. Cost to borrow is a negligible 0.47% annually, down 14% on the week. Bears are adding aggressively in front of earnings, but they face no friction whatsoever in the lending market. Options are similarly calm: the put/call ratio of 0.62 is essentially in line with its 20-day average and near the low end of its 52-week range of 0.62 to 0.87. The setup is bears pressing a stock they can borrow cheaply, with options traders not particularly alarmed.
The Street is moving in one direction. Morgan Stanley's analyst lowered the price target to $24 this morning, maintaining an Underweight rating, making it the most bearish call on the register. Susquehanna also trimmed to $35 earlier today, keeping Neutral. Barclays cut to $44 last week. Goldman Sachs and Jefferies, both at Buy, have also reduced targets in recent weeks, Goldman to $47 and Jefferies to $42. The mean consensus target is $50.81, well above the current price of $32.03, but that gap has been narrowing steadily as cuts accumulate. The analyst recommendation differential ranks in the 91st percentile, an unusual reading that reflects how spread the bull and bear camps are rather than broad bullishness. EPS momentum over the past 30 and 90 days ranks at just the 11th and 15th percentiles, meaning near-term estimate revisions remain negative even as the 12-month forward EPS growth estimate ranks in the 82nd percentile. The short score rank of 6 flags this as one of the more bearishly positioned names in its universe.
The bull and bear cases are genuinely divergent. Bulls point to the IQ9 microinverter launch driving US commercial sales, the Propel lease programme scaling to 200 net originations per week with 84% battery attach rates, a $873.7 million TPO backlog, and a 43.9% adjusted gross margin that has held up despite price pressure. Bears counter with US residential solar permits down 31% year-on-year in Q2, Wood Mackenzie cutting 2026 US residential demand to 3.75 GW (down 21%), microinverter prices cut 20% in December and again 12% to 14% in March, and US market share falling to 29.2% from 33.1%. The Q3 revenue print is expected by bears to trail the Street consensus of $308 million, with gross margin at risk if pricing pressure continues.
Peer performance adds context to the week's move. ENPH fell 5.5% over the past five sessions. Close peer SEDG declined 4.4%, while FSLR bucked the trend and gained 3.8%. Further afield in the semiconductor cohort, TE dropped 16.8% and MX fell 17.2%, suggesting ENPH has held up relatively well within a broadly pressured group, though that resilience may partly reflect the concentration of short activity already in the name.
BlackRock raised its stake to 17.7% of shares as of September 30, adding roughly 1.25 million shares in its last reported quarter. That is the largest passive anchor in the register. On the insider side, the 90-day net position is a modest 1,100 shares bought, reflecting small open-market purchases by the CEO in late May at prices around $67 to $68, well above where the stock trades today.
With twelve days to the October 26 print, the key question is whether Q3 revenue and Q4 guidance can narrow the gap between a $32 stock and a $51 consensus target, or give the now-elevated short interest of 20.8% of float the confirmation it has been building toward.
