Weatherford International heads into its Q3 earnings report on October 21 with Goldman Sachs trimming its target on the day, the stock down 13% in a month, and the Street still priced well above where the shares trade.
The Goldman move is the sharpest near-term signal. The firm cut its price target to $94 from $106 this morning, while holding its Neutral rating, bringing its view closer to where the stock is actually trading at $77.21. That said, the broader Street has not followed suit: UBS holds a Buy with a $116 target, Barclays maintains Overweight at $151, and Raymond James sits at Outperform with a $122 target. The consensus mean is $115.25, implying roughly 49% upside from current levels. The pattern of the past six months has been a steady drip of target reductions from the high-$150s at Barclays and high-$130s at Citigroup down to where things are today, which means the Street is coming to the stock, not the other way around. The bull case rests on international project growth and a capital-lighter strategic direction. Bears point to the company's dependence on MENA and Asia, which generates 43% of revenue, and to vulnerability on global trade policy.
Positioning in the lending market gives no particular edge to the short thesis. Short interest is 5.6% of the free float, up about 2.3% on the week but down marginally over the past month. Availability is ample at 463%, meaning there are more than four shares available to borrow for every share currently short. Borrowing costs have eased, down 13% over the week to 0.48%. None of these readings suggest a crowded short or any squeeze pressure. Options confirm the calm: the put/call ratio is 0.14, which sounds low, but it has edged up from its recent base and is running about 1.4 standard deviations above its 20-day average. Relative to the past 52 weeks, where the PCR has ranged from 0.05 to 1.07, the current level is still firmly in call-dominated territory. Call open interest remains dominant, consistent with a market that still sees the bullish case as live, even after a tough month.
The stock is underperforming peers heading into the print. WFRD fell 3.4% on the week. SLB dropped 2.5% over the same period and BKR fell 1.2%, but HAL, FTI, and XPRO all managed small weekly gains. INVX added nearly 4%. The relative weakness in WFRD, at 3.4% down against a peer group that was mostly flat to slightly lower, points to something specific to this name rather than a sector-wide sell-off. The ORTEX short score has drifted up to 48.3 from 45 a week ago, a modest but steady move in the bearish direction. Factor rankings are mixed: dividend score ranks in the 87th percentile, EV/EBIT is in the 64th, but EPS surprise lands in the 25th percentile and DTC rank in the 17th, both near the bottom of the universe.
Insider selling adds a layer of context that is at least worth noting. In July, director Neal Goldman sold shares worth roughly $1.36 million in a single day, without a 10b5-1 plan. Director Benjamin Duster sold $516,000 the same day. Director Jacqueline Mutschler sold a further $370,000 in August. None of these are enormous in the context of the company's institutional holder base, where BlackRock holds 11% and T. Rowe Price holds 7.5%, both of which added shares in the most recent quarter. Still, three directors selling on the open market over a two-month window, at prices well above where the stock trades today, is the kind of colour that tends to matter when a stock is approaching a catalyst.
The main event is the October 21 earnings release. The prior Q3 print in July produced a 2.7% gain the next day before the stock drifted back over the following week. The quarter before that delivered an 11.4% surge the day after results, with a 6.9% follow-through over five days. The range of outcomes is wide. What the market will want to know is whether the MENA revenue base held through the quarter and whether management has anything to say about the pace of target reductions from the analyst community.
