STGW enters its October 29 earnings date with an interesting internal contradiction: short sellers have been adding positions through the month, yet the analyst community remains one of the most uniformly bullish in the sector, and the stock just posted its best week in months.
The positioning picture is more cautious than the price action suggests. Short interest has climbed roughly 10% over the past month to 3.7% of the free float, with the bulk of that move coming in a single step around October 8, when shares short jumped from 8.7 million to 9.3 million in two sessions. That is not a crowded short by any measure, but the direction of travel is notable ahead of a print. The borrow market, meanwhile, remains very relaxed. Availability runs at 250%, meaning there are more than two-and-a-half shares available for every one already borrowed, well within normal territory and comfortably above the 52-week floor of 124%. Borrowing costs are effectively zero at 0.39%, rising 33% on the week but from an extremely low base. The lending market is not putting any squeeze pressure on short sellers here. Options traders are also leaning constructively: the put/call ratio is just 0.13, barely off its 20-day average of 0.14, and significantly below the 52-week high of 0.22. There is no hedging activity worth flagging.
The Street is firmly in the bull camp, with six buys against a single hold and a consensus price target of $10.71, implying about 17% upside to Tuesday's close of $9.13. Following the Q2 results at the end of July, multiple analysts raised their targets to $10 from the $8 area: Wells Fargo maintained Overweight, Needham and B. Riley both reiterated Buy, and Rosenblatt followed suit in early August. The bull case centres on accelerating fundamentals: net revenue grew 6% year-on-year in Q2, adjusted EBITDA rose 15%, and the AI-enabled digital transformation segment posted 18% organic growth. New business wins hit a record near $170 million, with the pipeline running roughly 30% above the prior year. Bears push back on cyclical exposure, arguing a weaker ad market would hurt Stagwell more than larger holding companies, and they flag The Marketing Cloud unit, which generated only $27 million in revenue with a $5 million adjusted EBITDA loss. The valuation is undemanding: the stock trades at roughly 7.4 times earnings and 7.2 times EV/EBITDA, both only marginally higher than 30 days ago, suggesting the recent re-rating has been earnings-led rather than multiple expansion.
The ownership structure carries a notable activist dimension. The ORTEX 13D register shows Polpat LLC holding 43.5% of shares as last disclosed, while CEO Mark Penn appears at 11.6% on a separate Schedule 13D filing last updated in January 2026. Goldman Sachs filed a Schedule 13D/A disclosing just under 5% in April 2025. The presence of multiple 13D filers, including the CEO, means a small number of holders have both the means and the stated intent to engage with management direction. As always with 13D filings, stakes are as-last-disclosed around the 5% threshold and can fall below without a further filing. Separately, retail attention has been running well above normal: a Wikipedia and ORTEX page-view composite z-score of 3.7 as of late September points to elevated public interest in the name, though this is a measure of attention rather than any financial signal.
The earnings history adds texture. The last print on July 30 produced a 4.6% gain on the day and an 8-9% rise over the following five sessions. The print before that, in early July, showed a similar pattern. Analysts have been ratcheting targets higher after each result, so the bar for a positive reaction appears to be rising alongside the fundamentals.
With Q3 results due October 29, the question worth tracking is whether the record new business pipeline and AI-driven segment translate into another beat on organic growth, or whether the macro pressure the bears cite starts to show up in client spending.
