BKV Corporation heads into the final three weeks before its November 6 earnings report with a notable split: short interest has nearly doubled since early September, yet the stock is up 11% on the week, outpacing most of its natural gas peers.
The short-side build has continued since the previous note. Short interest has now risen 120% over the past month, reaching 13.1% of the free float as of October 13, up from 11.5% a week ago. That is a meaningful step higher, and the ORTEX short score at 71.6 remains firmly elevated, broadly in the 70 to 73 band for most of the past two weeks. Borrowing costs tell a sharper story this week: the cost to borrow jumped to 2.12% on October 13, more than triple the 0.60% it held through most of last week, and up 232% on the week. That is still cheap in absolute terms, but the pace of the move is notable. Availability has tightened too, falling from around 297% on October 7 to 169% now, meaning there are still roughly 1.7 shares available to lend for every share borrowed. The borrow market is not close to squeezed, but it is meaningfully tighter than it was. The put/call ratio at 0.20 is close to its 52-week high of 0.22, slightly above its 20-day average, suggesting options positioning is mildly defensive but not alarmed. What makes the week interesting is that this building short base has not stopped the stock from rallying hard off its recent lows.
The analyst community remains firmly bullish, and this week's single most relevant move reinforces that. Truist Securities raised its price target on BKV to $34 from $33 on October 14, maintaining its Buy rating. At $24.44, the mean consensus target of $34.18 implies roughly 40% upside from current levels. That discount to targets has narrowed slightly from the extreme seen a week ago, but it remains wide by any normal standard. Barclays and Evercore both hold positive ratings, and recent target adjustments from multiple firms have been minor trims rather than downgrades. The bull case centres on BKV's natural gas production, its joint venture in power generation, and the potential for a power purchase agreement tied to data centre demand. Bears point to the risk that AI-driven data centre investment slows, commodity prices slip, or interest rates stay higher for longer. The EV/EBITDA multiple of 5.7x is undemanding, and the P/E of 11.8x has compressed over the past month as earnings estimates have moved modestly higher. The EPS surprise factor score at 89 and the 30-day EPS momentum score at 88 are among the strongest readings in the dataset, suggesting BKV has been consistently beating expectations.
The ownership picture is unusual and worth flagging. Thai energy group Banpu Public Company Limited holds 67.65% of BKV's shares and has filed a Schedule 13D, making it an activist-registered holder on the SEC's register. As the ORTEX disclosure note states, 13D/G positions are event-driven disclosures around the 5% threshold and stakes are as-last-disclosed. With Banpu controlling the vast majority of the float, the tradeable free float is genuinely small relative to the nominal share count, which gives context to how short interest at 13% of free float can coexist with a short score of 71. Insider activity over the past 90 days has been net negative at roughly $900,000 in sales, but all recent transactions were conducted under pre-arranged 10b5-1 plans, reducing their informational weight. Among institutional holders, BlackRock added 633,000 shares in the most recent quarter, and State Street added 388,000. Greenlight Capital and several smaller active managers built positions meaningfully in the June quarter.
Peer performance this week reinforces that BKV's 11% gain is not just sector beta. GPOR rose 4.3% on the week, AR gained 5.1%, and EQT added 3.7%. BKV's move is roughly double the pace of its closest correlated peers, which had been outperforming BKV for most of the prior month. The last earnings print, in early August, produced a one-day move of 6.3% and a five-day follow-through of 12.7%, both in the positive direction. With the November 6 report now 23 days away, the combination of a sharply rising short base, cost-to-borrow acceleration, and a stock that just outran its peer group by a wide margin makes the setup into that print the next thing to watch.
