BUUU Group Limited heads into its October 30 earnings report with a borrow market that has tightened sharply and short positions that have tripled in a month, even as the stock climbs.
The most striking feature of the BUUU setup is the cost of borrowing. At 229%, annualised cost to borrow has been running above 175% every day for the past six weeks, with a peak near 271% in late September. That is not a borrow market in equilibrium. Borrowing a position costs roughly 2.3 times the stock's value per year, which creates significant drag on any short that is held into the October 30 print. Availability tells a more complex story: it collapsed from above 3,000% in early October to roughly 45% on October 12, briefly signalling an extremely tight lending pool, before snapping back to 354% on October 13. The 52-week low availability reading was 0.06%, meaning the pool has at times been almost entirely lent out. Utilization currently runs at 97%, confirming that the vast majority of available shares are already on loan.
Short interest itself has moved dramatically. Shares short roughly tripled over the past month, rising from around 8,000 to nearly 28,000 shares, a 276% increase. The jump was not gradual: it happened in two discrete steps, first around October 7 to 8, and then again on October 9 to 12, when short interest jumped from roughly 9,500 to 29,000 shares. Given the absolute share counts involved, the float is clearly very small. FINRA's most recent fortnightly report, covering settlement through September 30, put official short interest at around 21,000 shares with a days-to-cover of just one day, consistent with thin trading volumes. The ORTEX short score has crept higher over the past two weeks, reaching 61.4, a level that places BUUU in the elevated-but-not-extreme range of the scoring universe.
Ownership is the defining structural fact for this stock. BUBI Services Limited holds 66% of shares, and Li Pan holds a further 15%, leaving a free float that is effectively tiny. BUBI Services also filed a Schedule 13D in December 2025, confirming activist-level intent at a 51.7% stake at the time of that filing. With institutional coverage limited to FMR LLC holding a fraction of a percent, the stock trades almost entirely among a handful of parties. When short interest doubles in a week against that float, the numbers are large in percentage terms even if the absolute share counts are modest. The activist filing is as-last-disclosed around the 5% threshold; holders who drop below that level may exit without a further filing.
The price action has run against the shorts this month. BUUU is up 7% over the past month and up 9% on the week, closing at $42.32. The two earnings events in the history show no clean pattern: May 2026 produced a 4% one-day drop followed by a 14% five-day recovery, while October 2025 saw a flat open and a modest 2% drift higher over the week. With earnings due October 30, the next two weeks of borrow-cost and availability data will show whether the recent tightening episode was a one-day anomaly or the start of a sustained squeeze in a market where the lending pool is structurally shallow.
