Alcoa reports Q3 results today with the stock at $40.08, down another 3.4% on Wednesday and 17% over the past month, extending a slide that has already repriced the shares well below where most of the Street sits on targets.
The options market has pulled back from the defensive posture it held through late September. The put/call ratio has eased to 0.96, roughly one standard deviation below its 20-day average of 1.01. That is a mild shift toward calls heading into the print, and it echoes the pattern noted before last quarter's results. Short interest is a moderate 4.5% of free float, up around 5% on the week but still well short of levels that would create any squeeze dynamic. Borrow availability is extremely loose at 1,743%, meaning roughly 17 shares remain available in the lending pool for every one currently borrowed. The borrow market is not telling a bearish story here.
The analyst debate has been settled at the edges by Barclays, which initiated coverage this morning with an Overweight rating and a $55 target. That is a fresh bull voice at the bottom. JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley both trimmed targets to $50 last week, keeping neutral-leaning ratings, and Wells Fargo cut its target to $60 from $71 in September while holding its Overweight. The consensus mean target is $59.90 against today's $40.08. That gap is wide, but it reflects six months of price erosion rather than sudden optimism. Multiples have compressed with the stock: trailing PE of 7.1x and price-to-book of 1.2x represent the bull case on valuation, while the bear case rests on continued EPS estimate cuts. The EPS momentum factor ranks in the 21st to 22nd percentile of the ORTEX universe, confirming the estimate drift has been running against bulls for weeks.
The previous print, in July, left the stock down 9.5% on the day and 6.8% over the following five days. That reaction set the tone for the months since. The earnings report today is therefore less about whether Alcoa can grow and more about whether the magnitude of estimate reductions has finally created a low enough bar for the aluminum market's current conditions to clear.
