Short sellers made bold moves this week. Chewy saw the biggest short interest jump among large US names. Its SI % of free float hit 92.2%, up from 66.7% just seven days ago, a 25-percentage-point surge in a single week. That puts the pet-products retailer among the most heavily shorted mid-cap names in the market.
Wolfspeed remains a bear favourite. SI stands at 86.4% of free float, up another 5.4 points over the week. Availability has collapsed to zero, meaning borrowing new short positions is effectively impossible. Days to cover sits at 10.2, a sign that any squeeze could get painful fast.
Matthews International and Fluence Energy also attracted fresh short sellers. Matthews climbed to 18.5% SI from 12.4%, while Fluence rose to 38.2% from 32.4%.
On the other side, shorts covered sharply in Sunshine Silver Mining, where SI dropped 18.5 points to 9.9%. Redwood Trust saw a 6.6-point fall.
Tesla remains a social-media flashpoint. The Roadster launch, set for 2028 production, is dominating financial feeds. SI sits at just 2.5% of free float. ORTEX alt data shows German car registrations, a dataset that leads Tesla revenue by 43 days, running 269% above the same quarter last year across all three months. Tesla reports on 21 October.
General Motors also reports on 20 October. GM auto-loan delinquencies in SEC ABS filings ran 1.2 standard deviations above their own history as of 29 September, per ORTEX consumer credit data, a number worth watching alongside the print.
