The week's two biggest prints are still ahead. GM reports Monday and Tesla follows Tuesday. Both face a tough macro backdrop. US core CPI hit 339.287 in September 2026, its highest reading since the series began in 1997. The annual rate rose to 3.7%, the steepest September reading in two years. That has already dragged down analyst targets for rate-sensitive names, with bank and utility stocks including SCHW, USB, DTE and SO all seeing consensus prices trimmed this week.
ORTEX alternative data adds context to the auto prints. German new-car registrations, which leads Tesla revenue by 43 days with a strong measured fit, are running 269% above the same quarter last year for three consecutive months. The same dataset leads GM revenue by 15 days and is running 133% above year-ago levels. However, GM auto loan delinquencies sit 1.2 standard deviations above their own history as of 29 September, a credit stress signal absent from Tesla's picture.
Chewy attracted sharp short interest pressure this week. Its SI % FF jumped to 92.2% from 66.7% in seven days. Wolfspeed carries 86.4% of its free float shorted. On the index front, Fabrinet's deletion odds from MSCI World leapt from 8% to 49% overnight. It sits 9.3% below the exit line with $826M of forced selling at stake if it falls through. The MSCI ranking cut-off is Monday 19 October.
The UK government reportedly courted UBS over a potential London headquarters move, an FT exclusive drawing wide attention this morning. Anthropic, backed by Alphabet and Amazon, secured the highest junk credit rating available in June, according to a separate FT report published today. SITE Centers surged 19% in after-hours trading, and Alcoa shares moved higher pre-market, both among the top movers heading into Friday's session.
