Iovance Biotherapeutics has given back 7% this week to $13.62, but the more striking development is what has happened in the short book: bears have now covered nearly 40% of their position from the September peak, and the pace has sharply accelerated.
Short interest has dropped to 15.4% of the free float, or around 61 million shares, down 19% on the week. That is the sharpest weekly decline since the unwind began. To put the full move in context: shorts held roughly 102 million shares in early September, a position built while the stock was still trading below $9. They have now shed 40 million of those shares, but the remaining 61 million, still underwater on average, face a Q3 earnings print on November 6, just 20 days away. The lending market offers no mechanical pressure to cover faster. Availability has loosened to 414%, meaning more than four shares are available to borrow for every one currently lent out, the most relaxed reading in the 30-day window. Cost to borrow, at 0.48%, has ticked up 30% on the week but remains negligible in absolute terms. The covering pace is therefore being driven by economics and fear of the upcoming print, not by any squeeze mechanism.
Options positioning has turned more defensive than usual. The put/call ratio hit 0.573 on Thursday, brushing against its 52-week high of 0.576 and running well above its 20-day mean of 0.508. At 1.35 standard deviations above the mean, that is the most hedged options market on this stock in at least a year. The combination tells a coherent story: shorts are covering into the earnings window while options traders layer on puts, a market-wide recalibration of risk heading into November 6.
The Street has turned sharply more constructive, and Barclays is the clearest evidence of that shift. On October 13, Barclays raised its price target to $18 from $15 while holding its Overweight rating, the second target lift from the same firm in a month (they had moved to $15 from $13 on September 17). Wells Fargo similarly raised to $18 from $14 on September 30, reinstating Buy. Goldman Sachs reinstated coverage with a Buy and a $15 target on September 24. The consensus mean price target now sits at $14.40, just above the current price, with the analyst-recommendation differential ranked in the 91st percentile of the universe. The bear case centres on autologous TIL manufacturing risk and the threat of emerging CAR-T competition; the bull case points to AMTAGVI's commercial ramp, second-quarter revenue of $99.3 million (up 66% year on year), and management's raised full-year guidance of $410 million to $420 million. Frontline melanoma data at ESMO 2026 and near-complete NSCLC enrollment give bulls additional catalyst optionality beyond the November print.
Institutional ownership confirms the renewed conviction. BlackRock added 5.9 million shares in the quarter ended September 30, bringing its stake to 8.2% of shares outstanding. State Street added 7 million shares in the same period, pushing its disclosed position to 5.4%. The inflows from two of the largest passive and active managers on the register arrived as the stock was still well below current levels, and both holdings were reported before the stock's 45% one-month surge. ORTEX also forecasts a 70% probability that Iovance qualifies for a share-count increase in the CRSP US Small index at the December 2026 Quarterly Review, with an estimated $93 million of buying by trackers due around December 22, equivalent to roughly 0.4 days of average volume.
The last earnings print on August 6 produced a 46% one-day gain and a 50% five-day gain, the catalyst that triggered the short squeeze the previous notes in this series have tracked. That historical context matters now: with 15% of float still short and a print 20 days away, the question heading into November is whether the remaining bears have sized down enough to absorb another positive surprise, or whether the covering acceleration of the past week reflects a more urgent reassessment of that risk.
