Lam Research arrives at its October 21 Q1 FY2027 earnings report having shed another leg since Monday, with the stock closing Friday at $263.94, a 17.2% weekly decline that extends the violent sector rotation that began after the stock touched $348 earlier this month.
The price action is the story heading in. The previous ORTEX report noted LRCX had surrendered its October bounce to close at $318.84 on October 9. Since then the stock dropped a further 17%, landing well below even the September trough. Peers confirm this is sector-wide pressure, not idiosyncratic: AMAT fell 19.3% on the week, KLAC dropped 15.3%, while and each shed more than 25%. lost 18.8%. The group is moving in lockstep, and LRCX is roughly in the middle of the damage.
The lending market offers no signal of directional conviction. Short interest is just 2% of the free float, near its lowest level of the year, down sharply from the ~4% readings seen in mid-September. Borrow costs are minimal at 0.28% and falling, off 31% on the week. Availability is effectively unlimited, meaning there is no shortage of shares to borrow and no squeeze pressure anywhere in the lending pool. This is not a story being driven by short sellers.
Options positioning, by contrast, has turned notably more bullish than usual into the print. The put/call ratio has dropped to 1.10, almost 2.3 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 1.14. At its 52-week low end, that reading suggests options traders have been reducing downside protection even as the stock fell sharply, a divergence worth watching given the magnitude of the price decline.
Analysts remain constructive but have been revising targets lower since the July print. Morgan Stanley raised its target to $385 this month while maintaining Overweight. B. Riley lifted to $390 on October 1. However, multiple firms cut targets after the July results, and UBS trimmed from $435 to $425 in September. The current stock price of $263.94 sits far below every published target, implying the Street continues to see meaningful upside but has not yet repriced for the level of the selloff. The bull case rests on Lam's dominant etch position, HBM exposure, and management's CY26 WFE outlook of $140 billion-plus. Bears point to the stock's 2.4 beta, China regulatory risk, rising competition from Tokyo Electron and AMEC, and operating expense creep.
One data point stands out in the ownership register. T. Rowe Price added 11.4 million shares in the most recent period reported, a substantial build for a fund group of that size. JP Morgan Asset Management added 8.4 million shares over the same window. These are not passive index flows; they represent active conviction ahead of a print that, on two occasions in the prior quarter, produced a 10% to 16% one-day gain.
The print on Tuesday will test whether management's raised WFE outlook and Lam's AI-adjacent positioning can justify a valuation that, even after a 17% weekly decline, still carries a price-to-earnings multiple of 23 times and a price-to-book of 13.5 times, at a moment when the entire semiconductor equipment group has re-priced sharply lower.
