Two conflicting signals are converging on IRDM ahead of its October 23 earnings report. Short interest has more than doubled in a week. Options traders are tilting sharply bullish. Four days out from the print, the tension between those two positions is the story.
Short interest jumped 128% week-over-week, rising from 1.47% of free float on October 8 to 3.19% now. That is the highest level in two months. Around 3.35 million shares are currently short.
The borrow market tells a different story from the positioning. Availability sits at 4,639% of outstanding short interest, meaning shares are easy to find. Cost to borrow has actually fallen 53% over the past week to 0.64%. Whoever is building this short position is doing so cheaply and without stress in the lending market. This does not look like a squeeze setup. It looks like a deliberate pre-earnings bet.
The put-call ratio hit 0.58 on October 16, 2.3 standard deviations below its 20-day mean of 0.60. That is the most call-heavy reading in recent weeks. Options traders are positioning for upside into the October 23 print.
The PCR sits close to the bottom of its 52-week range. The divergence between growing short interest and a falling put-call ratio is notable. One set of market participants is selling the stock short. Another is buying calls. Earnings will arbitrate between them.
There is a structural reason some of this positioning may be technical rather than directional. ORTEX forecasts an 84% probability that IRDM is deleted from the Russell 1000 and Russell 3000, tied to an agreed stock-and-cash acquisition by Rocket Lab Corporation. The estimated deletion trade date is June 29, 2027, with dates currently estimated rather than confirmed. For the Russell 1000, ORTEX puts the forced selling flow at approximately $215 million, equivalent to 4.4 days of normal volume.
Baralonco Limited holds a 13D activist position at 9.44% of shares, as last disclosed in an August 4 amendment. AQR Capital Management reported a 6.6% stake in August. American Century added 1.39 million shares as of September 30. These are the buyers. The short sellers building positions this week are betting against a register that is broadly long.
The ORTEX short score stands at 35.2, up from 29.1 on October 8. The jump coincides exactly with the short interest spike. Wikipedia traffic is running 1.76 standard deviations above IRDM's own 90-day average, a sign of rising retail attention.
