Short sellers and options traders are sending conflicting signals this weekend, as a record US payrolls print collides with a clutch of index rebalance deadlines and a heavily shorted semiconductor name.

Wolfspeed stands out as the most extreme setup. Short interest sits at 88.9% of free float. Available shares to borrow: zero. With the nearest options expiry on 13 November, any short-covering could translate fast into violent upside. Cost to borrow is 3.1% annualised, low relative to the squeeze risk implied by the float data.

Moderna carries a different kind of optionality. ORTEX Index Rebalance Radar puts the MSCI World addition probability at 88%, with $6.4 billion of forced buying expected across 1.2 days of normal volume. The announcement lands Wednesday. Moderna's short interest is a modest 8.9% of free float, so the index flow, not short covering, is the dominant options driver here. Active traders are likely positioned around the November 13 expiry.

On the bearish side, ORTEX data shows bears piling into chip names. Advanced Micro Devices and Micron Technology both carry dense near-term expiry calendars through November, suggesting elevated put activity ahead of the chip sector earnings cycle.

Live Nation Entertainment catches the eye from the S&P 500 screen: a short score of 71.5 and 13 days to cover, one of the highest in the index. Options expiries cluster at November 20 and December 18.

Record October nonfarm payrolls (159,293 thousand, the highest since 1997) reduce the case for rate-cut hedges. That shifts the balance of near-term options flow toward equity upside bets rather than macro protection.
