MMM reports Q3 results on October 20 with analyst sentiment pulling in two directions and institutional positioning quietly shifting ahead of the print.
The most notable pre-earnings move came from JPMorgan, which cut its price target on MMM to $185 from $205 on October 9, while holding its Overweight rating. The trim puts the target roughly 12% above the current price of $164.75, but the direction of travel matters: JPMorgan had only upgraded to Overweight in July with a $180 target, then raised to $205, and has now pulled back. Wells Fargo initiated coverage at Equal-Weight with a $195 target in late September, a cautiously neutral read from a firm whose analyst Stephen Tusa is a long-standing critical voice on industrial conglomerates. Bernstein upgraded to Market Perform from Underperform in the same week, lifting its target to $171, which sits just above where the stock trades today and signals a move from outright bearish to neutral rather than bullish conviction. Analyst moves since the July print have been broadly positive in direction but have cooled since mid-September.
Bulls point to 3M's recent operational momentum: adjusted operating margins reached 24.4% in Q3 2025, margin expansion of 100 basis points is guided for 2026, and organic sales growth has been running ahead of consensus. Bears focus on the Consumer segment, which missed by 2.2% last quarter, and on the China industrial slowdown, where the production index has decelerated from 6% to around 4%. PFAS litigation remains an overhang with unquantified personal injury exposure. The stock has gone almost nowhere over the past month, up barely 0.05%, though it recovered 3% on the week heading into the report.
On the institutional side, JPMorgan Chase filed an amended Schedule 13G on October 16, the most recent of eight filings, showing its stake has grown to 8.5% from 7.4% previously. BlackRock reported 8.7% as of September 30, up from 6.6% at its April filing. Both moves suggest passive and semi-active accumulation rather than activist intent; no Schedule 13D holder is on the register. The activist disclosure note applies: these stakes are as last disclosed around the 5% threshold, and a holder can fall below 5% without filing again.
Options positioning has shifted modestly since the October 14 note, with the put/call ratio edging up to 0.64 from 0.62, still below its 20-day average of 0.66 and a shade more call-heavy than usual, though not dramatically so. Short interest at 1.8% of the free float has eased further, down nearly 5% on the week, and borrow availability remains essentially unconstrained. The cost to borrow has pulled back slightly to 0.32% from 0.44% reported two days ago, still elevated relative to a month ago but no longer accelerating. The last comparable print, in July, produced a 7.3% single-day gain followed by nearly 15% over five days. The October 20 report will test whether that margin improvement story has held through a more challenging macro backdrop.
