Barrick Mining heads into its November 9 earnings with the stock down on the month, short positioning minimal, and a cluster of insider selling from the summer still fresh in institutional memory.
The price tells the first part of the story. Barrick closed at CAD 57.74 on Friday, off 1.3% on the week and down 2.7% over the past month. That's a softer performance than several close peers: Kinross Gold added 2.4% on the week, ARIS Mining gained 3.4%, and Agnico Eagle rose 3.1%. Wheaton Precious Metals and both fell, but by less than Barrick. The underperformance is modest, not alarming, but it does stand out against a week when gold-linked names were broadly supported.
The lending market offers no useful signal on direction. Short interest is just 1.1% of the free float, flat for two weeks running and up only 2.5% over the past month. Borrow cost is a negligible 0.5% annualised, down 33% from a month ago. Availability is effectively uncapped, with well over a billion shares available to lend, far exceeding current short demand. There is no meaningful short-seller thesis being pressed here, and no squeeze dynamic in play. The ORTEX short score of 28.5 is consistent with that: it sits in the 78th percentile for short-score rank, meaning the stock screens as relatively less shorted than most peers, not a high-conviction bear target.
The Street view is where the tension sits. A prior note flagged that Barrick trades at a 29% discount to analyst consensus targets, with bulls pointing to the Fourmile development project as the long-cycle value driver. Bears have focused on EBITDA multiple concerns in Nevada and valuation discipline more broadly. On current numbers, the PE is 9.6x and falling slightly over the past month, while EV/EBITDA has edged up to 4.6x. The dividend score ranks in the 97th percentile across the ORTEX universe, a reminder that Barrick now distributes meaningfully; the most recent declared dividend was USD 0.245 per share in February 2026. The EV/EBIT factor score of 87 suggests reasonable value on an operating earnings basis, even if near-term EPS momentum scores (17th percentile on 12-month forward year-on-year increase) flag that the Street is not aggressively revising numbers higher.
Insider activity from August is worth noting, though it has cooled since. The 90-day net position across all insiders is negative, with net selling of roughly USD 14 million in value. The most significant single transaction was a USD 3.6 million open-market sale in late August by one officer, partly offset by a USD 600,000 purchase by a director around the same time. A separate director added 5,000 shares at CAD 57.77 in mid-August, almost exactly where the stock trades today. On the institutional side, Capital Research and Management Company holds just under 6% and added shares in the most recent quarter. Van Eck and BMO Asset Management also added in the period. BlackRock filed a passive 13G at 5.0%, up from 4.9% previously; Capital International Investors, by contrast, disclosed a reduction from 5.2% to 4.1% as of May 2026. As the 13D/G disclosure note states, these positions are as-last-filed around the 5% threshold and may have shifted further since.
The earnings history adds a cautionary note ahead of the November 9 print. The most recent Q2 release in August produced an 8.4% single-day fall in the stock, with the five-day move settling at negative 3.3%. That is the only recent reaction in the data, so a single-quarter pattern should not be overread, but it does establish that results-day volatility can be sharp even when broader gold conditions are supportive.
The question heading into November is whether Fourmile progress disclosures and gold price tailwinds are enough to shift the Street's cautious EPS outlook, or whether operational detail from the Nevada assets reopens the margin debate that followed August's print.
