FSLR heads into its October 27 earnings with shorts quietly trimming positions, the Street turning more constructive, and a looming index rebalance adding a mechanical layer to the setup that has little to do with solar fundamentals.
The short side has been retreating. Short interest fell nearly 6% on the week to 9.85% of the free float, pulling back from recent highs above 10.5% seen through early October. The month-long trend had been building in the other direction, with SI up roughly 8% over the prior 30 days, so this week's reversal is a genuine shift in direction rather than noise. Borrow remains cheap at around 0.53%, barely changed on the week. Availability is wide at 658%, meaning there is ample capacity to short if bears want to rebuild, so the retreat looks like a deliberate reduction rather than a forced cover. Options positioning is almost exactly in line with recent norms: the put/call ratio of 0.77 is less than half a standard deviation above its 20-day average, unremarkable ahead of what has historically been a moving earnings print.
The analyst picture has shifted meaningfully since the October 8 note. Goldman's target cut to $272 remains on the record, but Truist Securities upgraded FSLR to Buy this week and lifted its target to $270 from $229, and Morgan Stanley's Andrew Percoco raised his target modestly to $326 while holding Overweight. The mean target has edged up to $274.77, still around 47% above the current price of $186.60. That gap ranks in the 91st percentile of analyst recommendation divergence across the ORTEX universe. Valuation multiples confirm the cheap read: the trailing PE is 8.4 and EV/EBITDA sits at 5.7, with both edging higher on the week as the stock recovers. The bull case centres on First Solar's China-free CdTe platform, $13.6 billion backlog, and 45X manufacturing credits. The bear case is unchanged: US module inventory near two years of demand, ASPs under pressure around $0.35/W, and eventual 45X erosion.
There is a mechanical wrinkle building in the background. ORTEX puts the probability of FSLR being deleted from the CRSP US Large and CRSP US Mid indices at 60% each, at the December 2026 Quarterly Review. The rank date is December 4, with the trade date December 22. The price that flips the call is $197.22, currently 5.7% above the stock. At $186.60, First Solar sits just below the line. The combined passive selling flow from both deletions would be around $241 million, roughly half a day's normal volume. A simultaneous CRSP US Small share-count increase carrying $303 million of buying would partially offset that. These flows are mechanical, triggered by price relative to the band, not by any view on the business, but they are large enough to matter in a thin tape around the effective date.
Capital Research and Management stands out in the institutional register, adding 3.7 million shares in the quarter to September 30 to reach just under 3.83% of shares outstanding, the largest quarterly addition among the top holders by a wide margin. Farhad Ebrahimi remains on the 13D register with a disclosed stake of just under 5%, as last filed in March 2025. That filing carries activist intent under SEC rules. As always with 13D/G disclosures, stakes reflect positions at the time of filing, and a holder dropping below 5% is not required to update.
The last two earnings events are worth noting. The July 30 Q2 print produced a 5.9% gain on the day and a 22.5% rally over the following five sessions. The prior print generated a 3.2% decline on the day but recovered 18.4% over the following week. Both episodes suggest the stock moves sharply after results regardless of direction, then tends to recover. With short interest easing into the print and the Street adding fresh Buy coverage this week, the question for October 27 is whether the underlying volume and pricing data validate the backlog story, or whether the bear case on ASPs and project timing starts to bite into the numbers.
