Deckers Outdoor reports on October 22 with short interest rising sharply, meaningful index rebalance pressure building, and analysts clustered around a price well above where the stock trades.
Short sellers have been adding conviction ahead of the print. Short interest as a percentage of free float climbed to 8.2%, up more than 20% in a week and 30% over the past month. That is a meaningful and accelerating build. The borrow market, however, tells a contrasting story: cost to borrow has eased to 0.37%, down from 0.59% six weeks ago, and availability is wide at 880%, meaning there are roughly nine shares available to borrow for every one already shorted. Shorts are growing in number, but they face no squeeze pressure from the lending market. Options positioning leans modestly constructive, with the put/call ratio at 0.86, slightly below its 20-day average of 0.90. After a 10.6% gain over the past month and a 3.4% rise on the week, the stock closed Friday at $85.71.
The bull and bear camps are arguing about durability. Bears point to a deteriorating fundamental setup: difficult comparisons, a tariff drag, and the risk that Hoka slows to single-digit growth while UGG goes flat. With 58% of fiscal 2026 sales U.S.-based and heavy dependence on wholesale and just three brands, the exposure to fashion-cycle risk and weather sensitivity is real. Bulls counter that the two-brand engine, UGG growing 5% and Hoka 8%, is supported by DTC momentum, rising gross margins despite tariffs, and inventories that fell 5%. Raymond James lowered its target to $105 last week while maintaining Outperform, and BMO Capital, which initiated in September with an Underperform rating and a $70 target, sits as the most bearish voice on the Street. The consensus target of $117.64 is well above the current $85.71 price, implying the analyst community sees material recovery, though several bulls have been cutting targets since the July print.
The index rebalance picture adds an unusual mechanical dimension to the setup. ORTEX puts the probability of Deckers being deleted from the MSCI USA, MSCI World, MSCI Kokusai, MSCI North America, and MSCI World indices at 99% in the November 2026 Quarterly Review, with tracker selling representing up to $700 million of flow, around 2.8 days of average volume. Simultaneously, ORTEX puts the probability of addition to the MSCI USA Small and MSCI World Small indices at 99%, generating an estimated $466 million and $233 million of buying respectively. The rank date is today. The announcement is expected on November 11, with trading on November 30 and effectiveness December 1. The net mechanical effect of these simultaneous index shifts is uncertain, but the scale of the flows means index-tracker positioning could be a significant factor in the stock's near-term trading regardless of the earnings result.
Past earnings reactions at Deckers have been consistently negative. The last three prints produced one-day declines of 4.6%, 6.4%, and 6.3%, with five-day losses in each case. The October 22 print will test whether the company can deliver enough on margins and guidance to break that pattern, or whether a fourth consecutive negative reaction confirms that the Street's $117 consensus is being rebuilt from a reset base rather than a recovery story.
